When Facility Problems Disrupt Learning

A recent article published by Education Week reports that facility problems disrupted learning for 1 in 5 school districts in 2024–25, resulting in 3.5 million lost learning days, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

The latest findings reveal the significant impact facility conditions can have on schools, students, and district resources. Here’s a breakdown of the report findings:

• Learning disruptions: 1 in 5 school districts canceled classes due to facility problems, affecting an estimated 2 million students and resulting in 3.5 million lost days of learning.
• Aging infrastructure: 14% of schools are in poor or very poor condition and roughly one-third are in fair condition.
• Common facility problems: Flooding and excessive classroom heat or cold were the most common chronic issues, reported by 22% and 21% of districts, respectively. Plumbing, ventilation, and structural problems also ranked among the leading concerns.
• Insufficient funding: More than half of district leaders said their facility budgets were insufficient to meet their needs, with high construction costs (82%) and low state formula funding (73%) among the most frequently cited barriers.
• Gaps in long-term planning: 16% of districts reported having no plans to address major building systems, such as HVAC or plumbing, in at least one existing school.
